Onyx Engineering installed Nexo PS Series loudspeakers at the new AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Springs, Md., for P.A and sound reinforcement requirements.
Onyx has been involved in the development of the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, which opened to the public earlier this year. Designed by architect John Eberson in 1938, the theater is part of a $400 million public/private redevelopment effort in Silver Spring. Intended to be an internationally recognized exhibition center offering film and video, the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center is a 49,000-square-foot complex featuring three theaters—one historic, two stadium-style—a cafe, a film-based retail outlet, office and meeting spaces, and reception and exhibition areas.
For the two stadium-style film theaters, Tom Beaudry of Onyx Engineering has chosen identical house systems that use a left-right configuration of PS15s, one cabinet per side, flown high above the proscenium arch on the lighting baton and mounted in a horizontal configuration. The smaller of the two theaters can hold an audience of 88; the larger theater boasts 200 seats.
“These smaller theaters are used for live performances, as well as film,” said Tom Beaudry, president of Onyx Engineering. “There are concerts, presentations and acoustic performances, and the theaters are also available for private rental and corporate meetings. Therefore, the AFI needed systems for sound reinforcement in addition to the THX surround sound cinema systems. The PS15s are light in weight, which was important because we wanted to fly them from the lighting baton and, because of the asymmetrical horn design, we could turn them on their side for installation. There’s plenty of gain before we get feedback off the podium mics, and they give out a warm near-field sound that is perfect for these luxurious theaters.”
