London, UK (July 22, 2014)—Spitfire Audio has released HZ02 – Hans Zimmer Percussion Los Angeles, the composer’s second cinematic percussion collection for Native Instruments’ Kontakt, which features drummer Jason Bonham.
Bonham was recorded for the virtual instrument collection on Fox’s Newman Scoring Stage and the Sony Pictures Scoring Stage as well as a large concrete space, known as The Cathedral, within Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions in Santa Monica, CA. The genesis of the new collection was Zimmer’s tracking sessions for his Man of Steel soundtrack. “At one point, I had this idea of a sort of drum circle, and I invited some of the best drummers in the world into this,” says Zimmer. “[T]he thing I noticed was that, even with all these other drummers around, Jason was just louder!”
Having recorded his first collection for Spitfire Audio, HZ01 – Hans Zimmer Percussion London, at London’s AIR Studios, this time Zimmer chose to record in Hollywood. “[T]he Newman Stage is a big room, really—plus it really has a beautiful acoustic with a beautiful top end, and the bottom end is second to none. It’s actually my favorite stage in Los Angeles, even though we did some stuff over at Sony as well—plus we did some stuff here where we have, let’s say, a very interesting-sounding room. It’s really rough. It’s got real grit and character.”
Grammy Award-winner Alan Meyerson captured Bonham playing his one-of-a-kind DW Vistalite drum kit using multiple microphone positions for the new collection. It was mixed in stereo and 5.1 by Grammy Award- and Oscar-winning engineers Geoff Foster and Steve Lipsom. The collection also features exclusive content created by Zimmer, including hand-crafted synth drums generated using his modular systems at Remote Control.
