The METAlliance Academy Resounding Success at Capitol Studios

The METAlliance recorded more than 20 songs during the Academy weekend of recording sessions at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. Featured artists Tierney Sutton and José James performed with their bands and recorded tracks for all attendees to witness and enjoy.

Recording enthusiasts, both beginners and seasoned pros, got to mix songs, witness great performances, ask every question they could think of and meet leading musicians, engineers, and acclaimed producer Don Was.

One of the featured artists at the March event was jazz singer and 8-time Grammy nominee Tierney Sutton. For over 20 years, she has fronted The Tierney Sutton Band, featuring pianist Christian Jacob, bassists Trey Henry and Kevin Axt, and drummer Ray Brinker. They tour throughout the world and have headlined at Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Sutton commented, “All of the members of the band have had the pleasure of recording with Al Schmitt on various projects over the years, but this was the first time, after 25 years together and 11 studio albums, that the band got to work with Al and his fantastic team.”

Blue Note recording artist José James and his band recorded with engineer Ed Cherney and producer/bassist Don Was. Often referred to as a jazz singer for the hip-hop generation, New York City-based vocalist José James combines jazz, soul, drum’n’bass, and spoken word into his own unique brand of vocal jazz. “We’ worked on tracks for José’s new Blue Note album for the entire weekend,” said Cherney. “And the band was incredible”

METAlliance founders Chuck Ainlay and Elliot Scheiner worked with attendees throughout the weekend exploring the fine art of mixing in Studio C.

This exclusive METAlliance Academy event followed on the heels of a sold-out weekend at Avatar studios in NYC after AES 2017. “In Session with The Guys” attendees participated and interact with the METAlliance founders in live recording and mixing sessions. By special arrangement, The 2018 METAlliance Academy occupied the historic Capitol Studios.

Concurrent with the live sessions in Studios A and B and mixing in Studio C, George Massenburg and Frank Filipetti set up shop in the spacious Capitol lounge for a weekend emulating an “In the Box” home studio set up, with critical listening analysis and exploration of advanced mixing techniques.

“We love working so closely with such a diverse group of students, pros, educators and recording beginners,” commented Frank Filipetti.
