Producer Steven Marsden Installs SSL AWS 900+

Producer Steven “Lenky” Marsden installed a 24-fader Solid State Logic AWS 900+ Analogue Workstation System in his Area 39 Studios in Kingston, Jamaica, breaking with a local music production trend of mixing in the box. Marsden has worked as a producer and musician with artists such as Sean Paul, Sly & Robbie and Beenie Man, and has created remixes for artists including Christina Aguilera, Sinead O’Conner and the Isley Brothers.

With the help of GC Pro’s Spencer Snipes, Marsden chose a system with three full XLogic X-Rack units to add 24 channels of dynamics to the console’s two onboard compressors. SSL provided a custom patchbay solution to complete the system.

The AWS 900+ replaces a small-format digital console and was selected after considerable research, Marsden says. “I was torn between the AWS 900+ and a Pro Tools controller,” he says. “SSL makes the greatest boards in the world, and the AWS 900+ is an analog console mixed with the Pro Tools and Nuendo technology. You’re getting the great SSL technology, plus you can operate the digital recording platforms. You couldn’t ask for more.”

The unit’s small footprint was another advantage, Marsden adds. “I don’t have to build a big room; everything can be small but the sound is big!”
