A Designs Audio is introducing a new series of switchable-tone MPA mic pre’s at AES/NYC 2005 booth #849, as well as the Audio Pacifica, a single rackspace, dual-channel (mono/mono) microphone preamplifier.

The MPA series includes the MP-1A all-tube mono microphone preamplifier and the MP-2A all tube mono/mono stereo microphone preamplifier. These are reportedly the first mic pre’s designed with tone switches enabling the units to sound like totally different preamps. Each unit has two-tone switches per channel, and when used in combination, this results in four different sounds on each channel.

Additional features include a Jensen input transformer, coupled with a custom wound output transformer. Other features include 60dB gain, -20dB pad, balanced XLR input and output, a vintage VU meter, custom milled face plate, phantom switch, phase switch and a front panel direct inject ¼-inch input jack. MSRP: MP-1A, $1,500.00; MP-2A, $1,975.00.

The Pacifica, now shipping, offers a uniquely “Made in California” feel due to the significant heft of its transformers. A Designs has added a front panel active hi-z 1/4-inch input that places the input transformer directly in the signal path. The cream colored panel and red knob scheme of the original mixing console has been retained.

Pacifica was designed by Peter Montessi of A Designs Audio (West Hills, Calif.) and pro audio designer Jon Erickson. They aimed to recreate the tonal characteristics of the Quad Eight solid-state desks with the assistance of Tom Reichenbach of Cinemag, whose father designed the original Quad Eight transformers. MSRP: $1,900.
