T-funk Goes to SXSW

Telefunken Elektroakustik will be showing its entire line of microphones, including the new M60 FET, at South by Southwest’s Gear Expo in Austin, TX, March 19-21.

Austin, TX (March 17, 2015)—Telefunken Elektroakustik will be showing its entire line of microphones, including the new M60 FET, at South by Southwest’s Gear Expo in Austin, TX, March 19-21.

Telefunken has partnered with The Continental Club in Austin, whose main stage will be equipped with a variety of Telefunken mics, including M80, M81 and M82 dynamics and DD5 dynamic drum sets. Charles Twilling, FOH engineer for Jackie Greene, who is performing at the club on Thursday, March 19, commented, “Everything good needs an excellent beginning. As a touring sound engineer, that perfect beginning starts with my Telefunkens.”

Telefunken also has partnered with Austin-based audio production company Nomad Sound, which will provide dynamic microphones for additional outdoor stages throughout the SXSW event.

The Continental Club’s production manager and Nomad Sound’s lead engineer Jamie Wellwarth, commented, “Telefunken has changed the whole sound of the Continental Club. Their M80 and M81 dynamic mics have brought out a clarity to the vocals that we just didn’t have before. It’s great working with T-funk, because we are going for the same thing—great sound in a rockin’ nightclub.”

Performing during SXSW is provocative Brooklyn band Rubblebucket, who completed its new album utilizing Telefunken AK-47 MkII and CU-29 Copperhead large diaphragm tube mics. Mathew Scheiner, Rubblebucket’s FOH engineer and tour manager, commented, “Telefunken’s M81 dynamic is the first mic we’ve come across that allows vocals to cut through the rest of the seven-piece band without being too harsh up top, and still preserve a really healthy amount of body.”

Lastly, Telefunken microphones will be used for the SXSW tapings of Jimmy Kimmel Live. Audio engineer Bart Chiate remarked, “The Telefunken M80s are my go-to mics for the live performances on JKL. But with the show happening in Austin, it wasn’t logistically possible for us to bring our own mics, so we reached out to Tfunk and they fixed us up with all the mics we need for our crew at the festival.”
