The all-female DIVA Jazz Orchestra recently recorded its fourth album, TNT, a tribute to longtime Johnny Carson bandleader Tommy Newsom, at KAS Music & Sound at Kaufman Astoria Studios (New York City).
The New York City-based band, which commissions exclusive music from top arrangers, wanted to honor Newsom as one of their most prolific writers and supportive friends. Approaching their 12th year together, and with a library of Newsom’s music, they decided to record a tribute album.
“Our experience with KAS Music & Sound at Kaufman Astoria Studios was by far our best recording experience to date,” says DIVA drummer Sherrie Maricle. “Joe [Castellon, creative director] is the most extraordinary engineer we’ve ever worked with; his talent, patience, creativity and genuine warmth brought out the best in all of us!”
Lead by Maricle, DIVA has performed at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Tanglewood.
