SPL Bows Three in Mastering Hardware Line

Stereo Console, 16-Channel Monitor Controller, Updated EQ

SPL of Germany has announced the release of three new devices—a console, a monitor controller and an updated EQ—in its Mastering Series hardware line. The new 3RU DMC stereo mastering console has four stereo inputs and four stereo sources, with two stereo outputs, as well as three stereo and two mono speaker outputs that can be expanded with the new MC16 controller. The DMC console is half the price of its predecessor, with more features and improved audio performance. To meet the needs of immersive projects, SPL released the MC16 monitoring controller, pairing the MC16 with the DMC for seamless integration of multichannel monitoring with a stereo mastering environment. Finally, complementing the range of 120V audio rail Mastering Series processors, the new PASSEQ offers the flavor and genuine sound of passive inductive coil filter equalization, with each channel offering 72 passive filters—all built with high-grade single core coils. The PASSEQ sports an extended high frequency EQ range to 35 kHz, with the mid-frequency cut now 200 Hz compared to its predecessor at 1 kHz. Other new features include a ±10 dB output gain control for precise calibration and an Auto Bypass function with interval control.

Universal Audio Releases Three New Plug-ins

Suhr PT100 Amplifier, brainworx bx_masterdesk, Bill Putnam Mic Collection

Universal Audio has been busy this summer, with a slew of plug-in releases for UAD-2 hardware and UA Audio Interfaces, along with a live sound announcement with the UAD Live Rack (see entry below). For the plug-ins, UA announced the Suhr PT100 Amplifier, the result of a five-year collaboration between amp designer John Suhr and guitarist/tone aficionado Pete Thorn. It allows users to switch between three channels: American, British and high-gain modded British, then customize tones with 3-band EQ and Crunch, Boost and Bright switches for each channel or apply Unique Custom Feedback, Presence and Depth controls to adjust amplifier response. The bx_masterdesk, meanwhile, features multiple levels of EQ and powerful compression, plus M/S processing, bass management and stereo enhancement, billed “an all in one mastering suite for songwriters, bands and professional engineers alike.” Finally, the Bill Putnam Mic Collection, in honor of the company’s founder, provides access to exacting emulations of rare, vintage mics used by Grammy Award-winning engineer Bill Putnam Sr. to track Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and so many others; they also faithfully model the transient response, harmonics, proximity effect and three-dimensional polar response of the original mics.

CEDAR Studio 8 Debuts New Bundles

Four New Modules and Four New Bundles for Audio Repair

CEDAR Audio has released four new plug-in processors in its line of audio repair tools and combined its entire suite into a number of new bundles: CEDAR Studio 8 DNS, CEDAR Studio 8 Restore, CEDAR Studio 8 Retouch and CEDAR Studio 8 Complete. The four new modules, bringing the line to 11, are: DNS Two (taking off of the DNS 2 hardware unit), with a newly developed algorithm for the quickest, simplest and most effective dialogue noise suppression; Manual Declick (Pro Tools only), for when extended scratches and clicks are encountered on film, tape or disc, whether analog or digital. Errors; Dethump (Pro Tools only), for restoring audio containing extended low-frequency thumps; and Declip 2, a major update from the original Declip, for those who need to remove clipped samples and reconstruct the original signal, improving clarity, eliminating distortion and restoring the original dynamic range. CEDAR Studio 8 is available as AAX, VST2, VST3 and AU plug-ins (as well as a standalone version of Retouch).

Genelec Unveils High-SPL Smart Active Monitors

Two-Way S360A, 7382A Sub Designed to Play Loud

Genelec’s new high-SPL Smart Active Monitors—the two-way S360A and the 7382A subwoofer—are intended for professional applications that demand high acoustic power or listening at a distance—such as large immersive setups or play-live monitoring in the studio. The S360 SAM features a 10-inch high-efficiency woofer based on Genelec’s Master Series, and a completely integrated extended directivity control waveguide DCW, supporting its 1.7-inch titanium diaphragm compression tweeter. Genelec specs a short-term SPL capability of 118 dB, with peaks a bit higher, and a long throw capability that can provide reference-quality accuracy at listening distances greater than 33 feet. The 7382 SAM Studio Subwoofer, a companion to the S360 and Genelec’s other large-format monitors, houses three custom-designed 15-inch long-throw woofers, said to deliver precise, powerful low-frequency extension down to 15 Hz with output in excess of 130 dB SPL. The 7382 also works with GLM software to control bass management and solve issues of subwoofer placement in unpredictable rooms.

Danley Sound Labs MINI 180

Even Coverage, Quality Sound Across 180 Degrees

Acoustician Tom Danley and his engineers at Danley Sound Labs have introduced the MINI 180 loudspeaker, providing the company’s know sound quality and even, seamless coverage across 180 degrees horizontal (by 90 degrees vertical). The MINI 180 has a frequency range from 149 Hz to 20 kHz (±3 dB) with impressively linear phase response across the range and across the beam width. Maximum output is 119 dB SPL continuous, 125 dB SPL peak. The speaker houses two 8-inch drivers and Danley’s patented technology to couple them into a single point source. Made of polyuria-coated 13-ply, 18mm Baltic birch, the speaker is 12.5 x 18.5 x 9.5 inches and weighs 45 pounds, making it simple to mount on a pole or wall.
