Rourketown Studios Installs Custom Console

Rourketown Studios in Northridge, Calif., has taken delivery of a custom console from Sterling Modular, which provides original audio furniture solutions. Pro audio retailer Vintage King Audio handled the installation.

This custom designed “hybrid” console is said to be an extremely flexible system featuring both a Digidesign ICON D-Command worksurface and a discrete Tonelux Universal Console. The console also features a full-length speaker bridge, a sliding computer keyboard tray and bubinga side panels. The complete console is supported by an all-steel frame and leg set.

“I wanted to conform a custom Tonelux console to the profile of my 24-fader D-command control surface,” says Rourketown Studios owner Jeff O’Rourke. “To make matters more complicated, I was having Martinsound design Flying Faders [moving fader automation system] that could fit in with the narrow Tonelux format. All of this had to fit into the custom Sterling desk, and since I was in Los Angeles, it needed to be done right— there wouldn’t be a second chance. Sterling Modular never hesitated about their ability to pull this off and make it beautiful as well.”

Sterling designed a completely custom chassis mirroring the D-Command that would accept the Tonelux gear, which required collaborating with Tonelux and Martinsound.

“Working with Jim [Maher] and the people at Sterling Modular was a pleasure,” O’Rourke says. “They went way above and beyond what I’d expect regarding customer service. Through every phase—everything from small tweaks to major changes—they were very accommodating and kept the price reasonable. Looking back, I realize I could never have pulled this off without Sterling Modular.”
