Bernie Grundman Mastering Returns to Quadrophonic

As a gift for attendees at the 2019 Making Vinyl conference in Hollywood, Bernie Grundman Mastering has cut the first ever all-analog live quadraphonic direct-to-disc recording. Grundman will receive the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award on the evening of October 14 in a presentation by Steve Vai at the W Hotel.

Mastering icon Bernie Grundman cut the historic Quad record with singer/songwriter Alex Lilly at his facility in Hollywood, CA, just down the street from the ceremony where he will be honored. Limited tickets are still available at Making Vinyl

Grundman, whose credits include hundreds of chart-topping records, is one of the few currently working mastering engineers in the world who worked with original Quadraphonic formats in the 1970s. Spawned from his studio’s participation with last year’s mastering of Suzanne Ciani’s 2018 “LIVE Quadrophonic”, (the first quadraphonic LP in over 30 years) this direct-to-disc session was engineered and mixed by BGM mastering engineer Scott Sedillo using BGM custom consoles and Sedillo’s Pueblo Audio microphone pre-amplifiers.

KamranV, producer of both the Lilly and Ciani projects says, “When first researching the possibility of rebirthing quadraphonic vinyl for Suzanne’s record, Bernie was one of the first people that I spoke with. His guidance has paved the way for spatial music creation of the past, present and future. This quad direct-to-disc, cut by the master himself, is just another example of how forward thinking Bernie has always been.”

Making Vinyl attendees will receive a copy of the discs which were swiftly cut and pressed in less than a week with the support of Making Vinyl, Rainbo Records, NiPro Optics, PHONOCUT, CyKiK and of course, Bernie Grundman Mastering.

The name Bernie Grundman is synonymous with Mastering. His world-renowned facilities, responsible for a consistently large percentage of chart recordings, were launched in 1984. In 1997, Grundman opened his Tokyo mastering studios and in 1998 relocated to expanded facilities in Hollywood. Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood is a complex of six studios, including dedicated 5.1 Surround and Lacquer Cutting rooms. Virtually any analog or digital format can be played back thanks to a deep inventory of modern and legacy equipment. The facility provides high quality vinyl masters, pre-masters for CD, and file masters for standard and high-resolution digital distribution and streaming.

Making Vinyl is the first B2B conference dedicated to the rebirth of the global vinyl manufacturing business. Making Vinyl brings together representatives of the world’s leading pressing plants, equipment suppliers, record labels, packagers, distributors, and retailers to compare notes on this astounding industry comeback.

Alex Lilly (Obi Best, Touché, Zero Dezire and The Living Sisters) wants to help you dance through your existential crisis. You may have spotted the Los Angeles-based songwriter/producer/mentalist touring in Beck’s band or on the road with the Bird and the Bee and Lorde. Most recently she’s synthesized her musical powers into 2% Milk, her debut full-length album which came out earlier this year on Inara George’s new boutique label, Release Me Records. Lilly’s songs – she describes the sound as “sexy psychological thriller” – are bright, gloriously Byzantine celebrations and critiques of modern life. With Lilly’s virtuosic vocals and sharp wit at the helm, her music is toe-tapping, brain-mapping pop at its finest.
