Florence, SC – April 2009… Fueled by an ambitious music program that helps drive the message home, Gospel Temple Worship Center and its eight ministries address as varied a congregation as one is likely to encounter. Guided by Senior Pastors Timothy and Becky Howell, Gospel Temple Worship Center’s congregation continues to expand and, to keep pace with its growth, the church recently completed the move into its brand new facility. At the heart of the church’s music program is a praise team vocal group that is accompanied by a full-fledged praise band. To ensure that both sermons and the music reach the congregation clearly, the church wanted a versatile and powerful sound system—and they found it with a TrueLine setup from Greensboro, NC-based WorxAudio Technologies.
Orangeburg, SC-based Templeton Sound Systems, a firm that specializes in the design and installation of church sound, church video recording/multimedia, and church stage lighting, was contracted to handle the design and installation of Gospel Temple Worship Center’s new sound system. According to Michael W. Templeton, President of Templeton Sound Systems, this project presented a number of significant challenges, as he explained.
“The new sanctuary has a very wide seating area,� notes Templeton. “This space is roughly 100 feet wide by 65 feet deep, so we needed to find a system that provided broad horizontal dispersion that could simultaneously project to the rear of the sanctuary without overwhelming those in the first few rows. Maintaining a clear line of sight to the stage / altar area was considered equally important. Church management didn’t want a large number of boxes hanging from the ceiling, as they felt this would be distracting. I’ve been very impressed with several of the latest product offerings from WorxAudio Technologies—particularly their new ‘all-in-one’ line arrays—and given the requirements of this project, I felt confident the company’s new TrueLine X3i-P would be a good fit for this installation.�
Once the necessary approvals were issued, the Templeton Sound Systems installation crew proceeded to install two WorxAudio TrueLine X3i-P line array clusters in a left-right configuration for the main house system. TheX3-P line array incorporates three modules, each with a medium format, 1-inch exit compression driver coupled with dual 8-inch cone transducers to provide a rich, fully balanced sound with a frequency range that spans from 45 Hz to 20 kHz (-10 dB). The system is powered by WorxAudio’s highly-regarded PMD-1.5 digital power amp, which delivers 1,000 watts for the low frequencies and 500 watts for the highs.
“The X3i-P is a tremendously versatile loudspeaker system,� states Templeton. “This line array provides an exceptionally wide 160-degree horizontal dispersion pattern and it’s equally at home with both speech and music reproduction. I consider this box to be one of the best values in the industry.�
For low frequency support, the Templeton Sound Systems crew deployed a single WorxAudio TrueLine TL218Si-P subwoofer. This enclosure is housed at the front and center edge of the stage / altar area in a recessed, sealed chamber. Known as WorxAudio’s Max Sub, the TL218Si-P utilizes dual direct radiating 18-inch, 1,600W cone drivers in a tuned enclosure, which provides maximum output with minimal distortion and smooth extended low frequency response. The system is powered by the company’s PMD-2 digital power amp that provides 1000 watts for each LF driver in the enclosure.
For monitoring purposes, a single WorxAudio TrueLine X1i-P was flown up against the ceiling and angled down toward the choir. The X1i-P is a two-way, high efficiency, ultra compact line array loudspeaker system loudspeaker that incorporates a medium format, 1-inch exit compression driver coupled with dual 8-inch cone transducers to provide a highly articulate system with a frequency range that spans from 55 Hz to 18 kHz. It is powered by WorxAudio’s PMD-200 digital power amp, providing 200 watts for the low frequencies and 200 watts for the highs.
Augmenting the overhead X1i-P monitor is a series of four WorxAudio Wave Series WX12M floor monitors. The WX12M is a two-way, high efficiency, passive loudspeaker. It is designed as a compact high performance monitor system for the reproduction of speech and music program material. These monitors are powered by Face Audio Contractor Series power amps. They are able to be freely positioned—depending upon the nature of the service.
“There’s a lot of sound system in this room,� says, Templeton, “and yet, it’s visually quite unimposing. The church just opened the doors to their new sanctuary in January and, already, we’ve received lots of positive feedback on the system’s performance. Both Church officials and members of the congregation have commented numerous times about the coverage and the consistency of the sound throughout the entire room. No matter where one sits, the coverage is extremely even and clear. This is a high performance system that offers tremendous return on investment. Plans for additional installations with WorxAudio’s TrueLine systems are currently underway.�
