121st AES Convention Platinum Panels Update

Jack Joseph Puig will moderate the AES 121st Convention’s Platinum panels.

The 121st AES Convention in San Francisco will present discussion panels on October 6, 7 and 8 that feature some of the industry’s top music-production talents, who are cumulatively responsible for producing chart-topping hits with sales in excess of one hundred million units. Two new panelists have recently joined the lineup.

Panel moderator and producer/engineer Jack Joseph Puig (pictured)—whose credits include Green Day, No Doubt, Mary J. Blige, Black Eyed Peas, John Mayer and the Rolling Stones—was recently named Geffen/A&M Records’ executive vice president. “These Platinum Panels will provide rare insights into the creative thinking and technical prowess of today’s busiest chart topping engineers and producers,” Puig says. “They’ll share tips about helping artists use the studio as a real creative tool, and they’ll field questions from the audience.”

On Friday, October 6 from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., Clive Young, author of Crank It Up: Live Sound Secrets of the Top Tour Engineers, will moderate Platinum Road Warriors, a freewheeling panel that will cover the latest trends, techniques and tools that shape modern sound reinforcement. Featured panelist Robert Scovill is a six-time TEC Award winner (and AES keynote speaker) whose credits include Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Matchbox Twenty, Prince, Rush and Def Leppard. Also participating is David Lawler, long-time front-of-house mixer for hit jazz vocalist Diana Krall, and Buford Jones, who has toured with ZZ Top, The Kinks, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Pink Floyd, George Harrison, Eric Clapton and others.

On Saturday, October 7, from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m., Bob Ludwig (president of Gateway Mastering & DVD) will moderate the Platinum Mastering panel. Participants will include Grammy winners Adam Ayan, Brian “Big Bass” Gardner and Darcy Proper, and Grammy nominees Stephen Marcussen and Herb Powers, Jr.

The Platinum Engineers panel will convene on Sunday, October 8 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Their discussion is titled “The Art of Recording and Mixing,” and will feature Geffen Records staff producer Tal Herzberg, engineer Dave Pensado and surprise guests.

A&M Records president and six-time Grammy nominee Ron Fair will moderate the Platinum Producers panel, which will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. to address “The Psychology of Record Making.” Fair was executive producer of Christina Aguilera’s album Stripped, which went Platinum 10 times. Panelists include Interscope/Geffen/A&M senior VP and president of Cherry Tree Records, Martin Kierszenbaum, and Eric Valentine, who has produced, engineered or mixed Smash Mouth, Third Eye Blind, Citizen King, Astro Lounge and Fush Yu Mang.
