Firewire Extender 800 From Gefen

Gefen announced the release of its new Firewire Extender 800, a solution that extends computer generated video for remote powered performance.

Gefen announced the release of its new Firewire Extender 800, a solution that extends computer generated video for remote powered performance. It works through a sender and receiver system that connects the local computer to the remote device with multimode fiber optics cables.

The Firewire Extender 800 sends large amounts of data speedily at rates up to 800 megabytes per second. This enables equipment to operate as if connected locally when anywhere within a 300-foot (100 meter) distance from the source.

“Apple’s G5 computers come equipped with a Firewire 1394b connection and our Firewire Extender 800 is simply a natural peripheral extension solution,” said Hagai Gefen, president, Gefen Inc. “Without this type of system, Firewire can only be extended about 15 feet without seeing some type of degradation, either in time lag or video image.”

The use of fiber optics cabling combined with innovative data packaging is what allows Firewire devices to perform as if connected directly to the source.

Designed for professional studio application market, Gefen’s Firewire Extender 800 (MSRP $799) is currently available to order.
