The Bus Comp Classic unit has THAT 2181 VCAs in the audio path, paired with a side-chain architecture incorporating a VCA within its feedback loop; together, they create the familiar behavior of the original SSL Bus Compressor, a studio mainstay.

SSL console character has varied over the years, creating trademark sounds along the way, so the new Variable VCA Drive provides all of them under one continuously variable control. When switched out, it delivers the clarity and transient response associated with SSL’s SuperAnalogue lineage, including the 9000 Series and Duality consoles, before progressively introducing the harmonic color of the FX384 and 4000 Series.

Meanwhile, the Bus Comp Classic retains the familiar SSL workflow, with stepped controls for Ratio, Attack, Release, and S/C HPF; each setting delivers its own defined musical behavior. SSL Auto Release adapts to complex material, retaining movement and detail as the production evolves.

Along side this, a six-position side-chain high-pass filter helps preserve the depth and impact of kick drums and bass, while a stereo external side-chain input allows other creative and delivery workflows.

SSL will have the Bus Comp Classic on-hand to check out at AES Nashville 2026 in its booth.
