Scoring composer Harry Gregson-Williams has completed his new five-room studio complex with the help of acoustician Bruce Maddocks, owner/chief engineer of Cups ‘N Strings Studios (Santa Monica, Calif.). Gregson-Williams’ credits list includes Shrek and Shrek 2, Team America: World Police, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Man on Fire, and The Rundown.
Gregson-Williams formerly occupied space at Hans Zimmer’ Media Ventures. Architectural design of the new studios was by Clover Lee and it was Zimmer who recommended Maddocks for acoustical design elements. Maddocks first made a study of the space, which included free-field microphone measurements and a combination of impulse testing, RTA real time analysis and RT60 reverberant time analysis. Based on those measurements, Maddocks designed a variety of acoustical treatments that included RPG® mid-range Omniffusers, and a combination of custom Helmholtz mid-bass absorbers and low-frequency membrane absorbers. In the performance recording space, Maddocks treated the live reverberant field with corner-mounted polycylindrical diffusers and cloud absorbers for optimum decay time and control of standing waves and reflections. Fabrication and installation were by Paul Reynolds, who has worked with Maddocks on numerous Los Angeles facilities.
In addition to acoustical treatments, Maddocks also mastered the soundtrack albums for Gregson-Williams’ scores for Man on Fire and The Rundown.
