Lauten Audio Releases SNARE Episode Two featuring Paul Bostaph

Thrash metal legend explores the evolution of his iconic sounds and how the right snare drum can define an entire record

LOS ANGELES, CA, October 17, 2023 — Lauten Audio returns to the hallowed halls of the Foo Fighters’ Studio 606 for the latest installment of their informational video series SNARE. Episode Two features a deep dive with thrash and progressive metal drumming powerhouse Paul Bostaph [Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Forbidden], longtime drum tech Ross Garfield of Drum Doctors, and 10X-Grammy winning engineer Darrell Thorp as they explore the evolution of Bostaph’s snare sounds across his iconic run of albums with Slayer, Testament, and Exodus.

“Every drummer has a story about a snare drum,  and within that story is a complex emotional relationship that is deeply felt but rarely discussed,” said Lauten Audio President Trent Thompson.  “SNARE is a four-part documentary series from Lauten Audio that brings those stories and the details that defined them to life. In reconnecting legendary drummers with the snare drums they chose to define the future of music, we explore the nuance, impact, and importance of the indisputable lifeblood of music, the snare drum

Blasting through iconic beats from such songs as Slayer’s “Killing Fields”, Forbidden’s “March into Fire” and Exodus’s “Now Thy Death Day Come”, Bostaph details the journey he took to find the ultimate, deep-shelled snare sound. Over the course of the conversation with Garfield and Thorp, he revisits favorites like the 1980s 3×14” Tama Bell Brass Piccolo Snare he first used with Slayer, the iconic 6.5 x14” Tama Bell Brass Snare used on Nirvana’s Nevermind that he borrowed for Slayer’s Undisputed Attitude, and his current mainstay, a Gretsch Maple 8×14” Snare. Along the way he speaks to the sonic and playing techniques required to capture big drum sounds on thrash metal records. “It’s that overall thing when you get a snare drum that sounds good, you’re gonna give it that extra thing,” Bostaph says. “It makes you feel excited and stoked to play.”
