Recording engineer Philip Rohr entered the raffle and has won the new Sanken CU-55 compact cardioid microphone, autographed by George Massenburg at the recent AES Convention in Los Angeles. Rohr has already tested out his new Sanken mic at his Prime Rib Productions studio.
“I started out with the mic on acoustic bass, right above where the player’s hands pluck the strings, and the sound is fantastic,” remarked Rohr. “I’ve also tried it out on acoustic guitar, and the CU-55 is very full-bodied, yet clear and natural. It’s definitely going to end up as my go to mic for acoustic stringed instruments.”
The CU-55 houses a side-firing 16mm capsule with a resonant chamber that has been tuned to create a perfect cardioid pattern, and is omnidirectional below 50 Hz. This new generation microphone is flat at 90 degrees and flat on axis, with very little proximity effect. Ideal for acoustic instruments like guitars, cello, harp and piano, the CU-55 can also handle the explosive levels of big brass and pounding tympani’s.
“Because of its small size I tried sticking it on a drum kit between the snare and kick to see how it works there,” Rohr continued. “I can honestly say that if all I had to work with were the overheads and the Sanken, it would be a drum sound to be proud of. I’m going to use it on trumpet and horns next — that should be fun.”
Sanken Microphones’ new CU-55 cardioid microphone has been certified by the Music Engineering and Technology Alliance (METAlliance). Featuring a modern, compact design, the CU-55 provides a rich vintage sound in a small, lightweight, easy to position package.
METAlliance co-founder Frank Filipetti remarked, “The CU-55 has just about the smoothest mid-range I’ve ever heard in any microphone. Whether using it on strings, vocals or drums, this mic has a wonderful presence without any harshness.”
Prime Rib Productions offers high quality audio recording/mixing/processing services for individual musical artists, record companies, management companies, film/television production companies as well as voiceover artists, audio book publications and e-learning production companies. Rohr also composes and records music for vocal artists, television, film, and web content.
