131st AES Convention Chair Jim Anderson reports that Education Committee Chair John Krivit (pictured) has fashioned one of the conventions’ most eclectic and colorful programs. “From a one-on-one conversation with recording star Ben Folds to highly anticipated Alex Case Tutorials on Delay and Comb Filters, this year’s Education Events will cover issues totally connected to today’s generation of college level audio students,” Anderson says. Scheduled for October 20-23, the Convention will be held in New York City’s Jacob Javits Center.
On Thursday, October 20, author and University of Massachusetts Professor Alex Case will present a “Tutorial on Delay,” an integral element of all recording sessions for a broad range of effects. Also, finalists in the AES Student Recording Competition will be announced, and students can register for SPARS Mentoring Sessions and PMC Student Recording Critiques.
On Friday, October 21, the Exhibition Hall opens. Student engineers will discover new products and learn which companies are pioneering the most meaningful technology. At a Career and Education Fair, colleges and pro audio educators will offer detailed information about their audio programs to potential students. SPARS is sponsoring a mentoring Workshop for students and professionals as a lunchtime event. Also, finalists in Sound for Visual Media and Traditional Acoustic Recording categories will be presented to the judges. Karlheinz Brandenburg, who developed the MP3 format, will offer a presentation. Finally, recording artist Ben Folds will be available for a one-on-one dialog.
On Saturday, October 22, an Education Forum will offer an open dialog among educators regarding curriculum, facilities and pedagogy, and a chance to hear about a proposed Summer 2013 AES Education Conference. The AES Student Recording Competition will focus on traditional and non-traditional multitrack recording categories. All attendees, including non-finalists, will gain tremendous insights from the judge’s comments on student presentations.
On Sunday, October 23, Alex Case will provide a more complete understanding of the comb filter to help students track and mix with confidence. “A Career in Game Audio” will offer an overview of the skills required to matriculate into the game audio industry, including the unique roles audio team members play in game audio design, content creation, technology development and implementation of audio assets. In the second meeting of the Student Delegate Assembly, winners of the AES Student Recording Competition will be announced. The assembly will also hold an election for a new SDA officer.
