Ex’pression Center for New Media Adds to Curriculum

Ex’pression Center for New Media has added a new focus addition to its Sound Arts curriculum, Audio Post-Production, and launched a new game audio curriculum

Ex’pression Center for New Media has added a new focus addition to its Sound Arts curriculum, Audio Post-Production, and launched a new game audio curriculum with the help of the Game Audio Network Guild (G.A.N.G.).

Throughout the Post-Production course, students will learn about sound design, ADR and Foley recording. Fundamental skills such as documentation and CPU file management will also be practiced.

“As the world of post-production is changing rapidly in the media industry today, as are the tools and techniques. Though most of the fundamental principles remain the same, the methods by which post-production audio for TV, film and animation are changing at an accelerated rate,” said Gary Platt, president and co-founder of the Emeryville, Calif.-based school.

Students will also have numerous projects to complete by the end of the course incorporating their newfound skills by creating music beds, sound EFX from scratch and from libraries, recording and synching ADR, and recording and synching Foley—from the workflow to the final mix.

The school is also planning a separate enhancement to the curriculum for early next year that will focus on interactive audio, which will include sound for PDAs and the Web.

Also added to the curriculum are the new game audio courses, which will be launched in 2004. Ex’pression and G.A.N.G. (www.audiogang.org) have developed a five-week course designed to offer students focused training in the techniques and tools necessary to create audio and sound effects for games. This extended curriculum will be offered to current and new sound arts program students.

“We are proud to assist the Ex’pression Center for New Media in developing and delivering a game audio curriculum for students passionate about a career in the game industry,” said G.A.N.G. president Tommy Tallarico and board member Rich Goldman. “G.A.N.G. has offered its resources and expertise in putting the final touches on this truly unique and innovative program.”
