In-The-Round Sound Outdoors in Mexico

Mexico marked its 205th Independence Day on September 15, and nowhere was the celebration bigger than Zócalo public square in Mexico City, where five sound reinforcement companies put their systems together to create an outdoors, in-the-round concert stage system with hundreds of Nexo cabinets that covered 40,000 people.

Mexico City, Mexico (September 30, 2015)—Mexico marked its 205th Independence Day on September 15, and nowhere was the celebration bigger than Zócalo public square in Mexico City, where five sound reinforcement companies put their systems together to create an outdoors, in-the-round concert stage system with hundreds of Nexo cabinets that covered 40,000 people.

Ensuring all those spectators could enjoy the live music, mass singing and fireworks was sound designer Sergio Zenteno, who coordinated the pooling of equipment inventories from Tecnoson Espectaculos, ROA, Star, Backline and Concepto 3 to create a unique system that used 12 Nexo line arrays around the four-sided main stage to deliver 360-degree coverage.

Three sides of the stage used Nexo’s STM Series modular line array as the main PA., while the Catedral side deployed a Nexo Geo D system. Below the STM arrays of main and bass cabinets were Nexo’s recent M28 omnipurpose modules, here used as a downfill. STM subs were groundstacked three high. All that breaks down as
• 18x STM M46/B112 per side + 2x M28 per side, with 36x S118
• 12x STM M46/B112 per side + 2x M28 per side, with 24x S118
• 12x STM M46/B112 per side + 2x M28 per side, with 24x S118
• 16x GEO D per side, with 8x CD18 per side

Additionally, there were four arrays of 12x GEO S8 for frontfill at the corners of the stage, serving as front coverage 45 degrees outside of the main arrays. With the main arrays set at 17.5 degrees off the horizontal axis, the systems achieved full 360-degree coverage.

The stage monitoring system used 52 pieces of Nexo PS15, with additional PS15s used for frontfill, and older Alpha eF and eM/B1-18 cabinets put to use for sidefill. Powering the STM system was Nexo’s standardised Universal Amp Racks (NUAR).
