Nashville, TN (April 24, 2014)—For her latest album, Everlasting, Martina McBride revives the spirit of the 1950s and 60s with the help of producer Don Was (Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan), who chose a number of vintage mics, instruments, amps and other equipment for the recording process.
McBride chose to record her album at Blackbird Studio in Nashville, where owner John McBride houses an extensive collection of vintage gear, including over 1,000 vintage microphones.
A rare Neve 8078 console, originally built for LA’s Motown Studio, anchors Studio A at Blackbird. Was recorded McBride on the Neve console, mixing through a Studer C37 tube, 1/4 –inch two-track analogue tape machine. Vintage EQs used are originals from Motown and EMI Studios (London). Was chose to use vintage Neumann U47 (1948), Neumann M50 (1950) and Neumann U67 (1960 to 1971) mics for vocals.
For the recordings, Michael Henderson (bass player on Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”) played guitars, Reggie Young (electric guitar for Elvis Presley’s and McBride’s versions of “Suspicious Minds”) played electric guitar, and Luis Resto (best known for his 2003 Grammy and Oscar wins for co-writing Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”) played keyboard and horns.
