Mixing Legends For Lollapalooza’s Stream

Edmeston, NY (September 3, 2015)—Mix engineer Chris Shepard and his team at American Mobile recently mixed Paul McCartney and Metallica for the live web stream of the 2015 Lollapalooza festival, held every summer at Grant Park in Chicago. Presenting five bands a day, the webcast was created for Springboard Productions and Red Bull TV by American Mobile, Shepard’s company for more than 20 years, which specializes in mobile music recording and live mixing for video streaming.

While the pressure was on to get the mixes just right for the concerts, there was the added wrinkle that Shepard was using a new piece of gear, as he brought in one of the first Dangerous Music 2-Bus+ summing amps for the effort. Interested to hear the new integrated processing capabilities, notably Paralimit and the custom X-Former transformer control, Shepard set up the 2-Bus+ in his audio truck the day before Lollapalooza’s soundcheck, and ran 10 favorite songs through it to get some ideas of what might work for sweetening the live audio mixes ‘on the fly’.

By the end of the day, he said, he was confident with the unit in line and comfortable with the sonic imprint of the Paralimit and X-Former as the last thing in his audio chain. “I created a basic starter setting for each band. Controls felt very predictable and easy to use. I immediately felt like the 2-Bus+ was my safety net I could lean on a bit,” explains Shepard. “I really hit the Paralimit good on each set helping me hold the mixes together and pump up the volume. Even more than that, it feels good mixing into the Para-limit, helping me dig up little nuances and subtle tones in the mix that give it color.”
