The Berklee College of Music, one of the premier training organizations for a “career in the contemporary music industry,” has recently acquired 11 Apogee Big Ben master clocks for its film scoring facility.
“We’re upgrading our labs in the Film Scoring Department, and hope to have everything online by September,” says lab manager Jack Freeman. The upgrades include several workstations in the central lab/classroom where scoring to picture and music editing are taught using Pro Tools HD/TDM/LE and MOTU Digital Performer systems.
Big Ben was highly recommended by a Berklee-alum who was working in post-production facilities in L.A. “Based on his favorable endorsement we explored Big Ben further and found its benefits to be two fold; as a noticeable improvement to the sound quality and as a great teaching tool,” remarked Freeman. “Our plan is to have one Big Ben unit on each workstation. It will reference blackburst video from the central House Sync generator in the room, and will then drive the audio interfaces (Digi 002 and MOTU 828) and video devices (Aurora Igniter PCI card, Canopus DV converter and JVC VHS VCR) on each workstation. The fact that the Big Ben provides word clock, ADAT/TOS and SPDIF outputs makes it ideal for all the gear we are using; the front panel controls and display should also make it very easy for our students to operate,” Freeman adds.
