San Diego, CA (October 8, 2026)—We’re used to hearing spatial audio in films, music files, theatrical productions and TV shows, but any time you shoot video on your phone, it’s captured in stereo. Spotting an opportunity, Sony has now launched the ECM-AX10, a USB-C powered microphone that plugs into your phone and records spatial sound.

Aimed squarely at vloggers, mobile filmmakers and content creators, the ECM-AX10 uses four built-in, omnidirectional capsules to record sound from multiple directions, while Sony’s dedicated Spatial Audio Video Tool app uses the results to create a sense of space, direction, and distance in the Eclipsa Audio format. Doubling down on the open-source format from Google and Samsung, the microphone is Eclipsa-certified.

The ECM-AX10 offers three recording options: Ambisonics recording for spatial audio production exporting to Eclipsa Audio; binaural recording for an immersive headphone experience using Sony’s proprietary spatial audio technology (also used for 360 Reality Audio); and stereo recording for everyday videos and social content. Support for 4K recording will be added in December 2026.
