Lauten Audio Releases SNARE Episode Three featuring James Gadson

Legendary R&B, funk, and soul drummer explores his signature ‘pop’ and how the changing sounds of the snare influenced 60 years of chart hits

LOS ANGELES, CA, November 14, 2023 — Lauten Audio announces the release of the third installment of SNARE – the brand’s ongoing YouTube series that explores the history, mystery, and nuance of snare drums guided by some of the most iconic drummers in the industry. SNARE Episode Three is a conversation with legendary drummer James Gadson, who in addition to making his mark on Motown with Bill Withers and the Temptations among others, has recorded well into the 2020s across a variety of genres with a veritable who’s-who of well-known artists including Paul McCartney, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, Albert King, and Beck. Gadson explores the changing nature of his snare sounds with Grammy-winning engineer Darrell Thorp in the Foo Fighters’ Studio 606.

“SNARE is a four-part documentary series from Lauten Audio that explores the relationship between drummers and snare drums, and how the sounds of these drums have defined some of the most beloved recordings in popular music,” said Lauten Audio President Trent Thompson. “James Gadson is one of the most-recorded session drummers in history and has left an incredible mark on R&B, Funk, Soul and Pop music that we still hear on records today.”

Gadson takes us through some of his most well-known beats on his favorite snares, including the 5×14’ Ludwig Acrolite that he played on Charles Wright’s “Express Yourself”, the punchy 6.5×14” Ludwig Suraphonic he played on Bill Withers’ ‘I Don’t Want You on My Mind’ and Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’, and his 5×14’ Pearl Jupiter that he used on Beck’s ‘Sea Change’ album, and specifically the song “Paper Tiger”. In conversation with Thorp, he explores his evolution as a player alongside the changes in popular music which have seen both his sound and style evolve to suit the times, while still searching for that perfect ‘pop’ for every session.
