SSL Duality SE Consoles Drive Degree Programs at Miami Dade College

Two new consoles installed for film and recording programs at North and Kendall Campuses

MIAMI, FL – The School of Entertainment & Design Technology (SEDT) at Miami Dade College (MDC) has chosen Solid State LogicDuality SE Consoles to drive both film and recording degree programs at its North and Kendall Campus studios. MDC chose Duality having had a positive experience with an SSL AWS 900 installed in 2010 in the North Campus recording studio. Miami Dade has installed the two new Duality consoles to provide students with the most advanced analogue platform available for music, Foley, voice-over and sound stage recording, while offering a sophisticated, integrated DAW controller. The new North Campus facility is purpose-built for the film program, with the Kendall Campus recording studio receiving a major facelift.

“We are a learning institution that competes with other institutions that teach sound recording,” says Duane Summers, studio manager for Miami Dade College, Kendall Campus. “SSL is the industry standard, so it made competitive sense for us to go with two Duality consoles. Another deciding factor was that Duality offers a seamless combination of analogue signal flow with an integrated DAW controller, all put nicely together in one neat package. Duality was the best choice to meet the academic needs of our students across all sound recording disciplines.”

The Duality at the North Campus is the centerpiece of a new hybrid, dual control room sound studio, built to round out the program offerings for SEDT’s film program. The larger Duality room shares a soundstage which doubles as a classroom, with the other, smaller, DAW controller-based control room. The complex includes a complete Foley stage, an overdub booth and a piano booth that are acoustically isolated from the main stage so that the studio complex can be used for two projects simultaneously. The second Duality resides in the recently upgraded, high-end music recording studio at the Kendall Campus.

“Our experience with Duality at the rebuilt Kendall studio complex has been grand,” states Summers. “The install and training went very smoothly and this was important as we literally installed the console in the middle of the semester. Those students got the rare opportunity to watch the commissioning of an SSL console as a part of their coursework. Duality is now our icing on the cake for the great program that SEDT offers. Everybody loves the console.”

From a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Film, Television & Digital Production to an Associate in Science degree in Music Business, Creative Production, the MDC School of Entertainment & Design Technology integrates multi-discipline training for each program. Film or TV Production majors, for example, will spend time learning about sound recording using Duality in the more advanced coursework for a well-rounded educational experience.

“We really like Duality as a teaching tool because it addresses every aspect of production a student will encounter in the real world,” explains Summers. “Duality also has a great, crystal clear sound quality, so the students can really hear the difference between microphones or EQ settings. Also, when a student mixes a project, Duality seems to glue the mix together. As good as a mix may sound, once processed though the master bus compressor, everything really sonically pops. Duality also helps the instructor because everything needed for capture and mix can be done from the centre of the console. Students can crowd around and see what processes need to be done.”
