Michael Cooper has logged over 60,000 hours at the console working with music acts in the West and multimedia production houses on the East Coast and in Asia. He has composed music for feature-length film and worked with singer/songwriter Ashley Cleveland, Academy Award-winning actor William Hurt and former weekend anchor of ABC World News Barry Serafin (the latter for PBS). A Contributing Editor for Mix since 1996, Michael has written more than 500 pro-audio hardware and software reviews, as well as how-to articles on recording engineering, mixing, mastering, and post-production. His journalism has also appeared in Wired, Electronic Musician (for which he also served as a Contributing Editor for nine years), Keyboard and other pro-audio magazines. A trailblazing wilderness explorer and mountaineer in private life, Michael’s award-winning outdoors-adventure memoir Miscalculated Risks: Attacked, Crippled, Paralyzed, Drowning, Unconscious and Freezing in The Wild (Just Not All at Once) chronicles the more than a half-dozen times Michael nearly lost his life while navigating eight thousand miles of wild country—including places where nobody in recorded history had gone before. The prestigious 2025 American Writing Awards selected Miscalculated Risks as the Winner for Best New (Debut) Non-Fiction.
