Going viral with astonishing speed is “Garden of Your Mind,” a melodic mashup video of children’s television legend, Mr. Rogers, given the auto-tune treatment and more by John Boswell, the mastermind behind the popular Symphony of Science video series.
Boswell collaborated with PBS Digital Studios and The Fred Rogers Company to make the clip, marking a change of pace from his usual Symphony of Science work. Typically, he remixes noted scientists, creating trance-based electronica tracks that are released on the net, and occasionally even on vinyl, as happened with his first effort, the Carl Sagan viral video, “A Glorious Dawn,” which Jack White’s Third Man Records released as a 7″ in 2009.
In an interview with Scientific American, Boswell explained he uses a mixture of Propellerheads Reason/Record; Celemony’s Melodyne; and both Adobe Audition and Premiere to create his clips. The Rogers clip also marks a change of pace, as he has permission to create the work, though as he noted in the interview, “…most of my works I consider Fair Use under the DMCA, so I don’t actively seek permission for every clip.” While fair use is entirely fair, one suspects that Mr. Rogers would suggest that you always get permission, no?
