Recording and mix engineer Bruce Sugar recently installed a JBL LSR4300 5.1 surround sound system. Sugar is currently using the system to mix a concert by Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band for an upcoming televised concert and subsequent DVD release. The live performance took place on July 16, 2006, at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn., and features All Starr Band members Edgar Winter, Billy Squier, Richard Marx, Sheila E, Rod Argent and Hamish Stuart.
According to Sugar, there are inherent challenges in mixing a live performance for television. “Live shows are always challenging—this one in particular, since there are no in-ear monitors being used,” Sugar notes. “It’s a pretty big band and there are a lot of stage monitors to deal with. The audio comes through crystal-clear on the LSR4300s and it’s definitely been easier mixing with them.
“When purchasing studio monitors, I want something that’s pleasant to listen to all day long, that won’t fatigue my ears,” he continues. “Beyond that, the networking features of the LSR4300 are great for 5.1 mixing. Since I mix right through Pro Tools, I don’t need a separate 5.1 matrix to monitor the system, so the LSR4300 Control Center Software has saved me quite a bit of money.”
