MXL Microphones’ new MXL.007 ($229.95) pressure-gradient USB stereo condenser microphone has two 22mm gold capsules with a 90-degree X/Y pickup pattern. It connects directly to a computer’s standard USB port without the need for an external mic preamp and supports USB 1.1 and USB 2. As a plug-and-play device for Windows and Macintosh, the MXL.007 requires no special drivers.

The MXL.007 provides a 3-position, switchable attenuation pad with settings for Hi (0 dB), Medium (-5 dB) and Lo (-10 dB). The digital section of the microphone features a 16-bit Delta Sigma A/D converter with sampling rates of 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz. A heavy-duty wire mesh grill with an integrated pop filter protects the capsule. It also has an LED behind the grill for orienting the mic toward the sound source.

The MXL.007 USB has a maximum SPL rating of 137 dB and a frequency response of 20 to 20k Hz. It ships with a travel case, desktop microphone stand, 10-foot USB cable, wind screen, owner’s manual and applications guide.
