~ Sound Control Products Get the Job Done in Live Room and ISO Booth ~
PALATINE, IL – Planet10Studios, a new, state-of-the-art recording facility in the Chicago suburbs, discovered several acoustical flaws in the original construction of its new space while preparing its studio for opening. Looking for the perfect solution, Planet10Studios turned to Auralex and the company’s wide variety of products to control and tighten the sound characteristics of the live recording room, isolation booth and stand speaker mounts.
Auralex’s 4-inch StudioFoam Wedges, SheetBlok Sound Isolation Barrier, Mineral Fiber and MoPAD products were employed throughout the facility to provide the balanced sound quality the studio was looking for.
“Our live room is yielding a very true and accurate response across all frequencies, and all the players, whether a drummer, bassist, guitarist, vocalist or pianist, say our room is sounding better than it did in the original construction,� says Jim Johnson, owner of Planet10Studios and a 30-year veteran as a performer, writer, engineer and producer. “We recently took over the space and really needed to evaluate the isolation and tonal characteristics of the main room, our bass traps and the isolation booth. Auralex solved our acoustic problems in general, while the MoPads and 2x4x2 Wedges provided an appealing visual surface that complements our décor.�
Planet10Studios has hosted several artists including Rachel Barton Pine, Sleeping Shelby, Paul Wertico, IlliNoise, Slip Stream, Bullet Called Life, The Geary Smith Band and many more. The studio offers an array of high-end, vintage gear supported by a classic Neve 8108 console. This professional classic audio approach mandated that the acoustic response of the facility provide a steady environment for accurate capture. The deliberate application of Auralex products helped to sonically tie the facility together.
“The Mineral Fiber really solved the trapping of the sounds in the live room,� continues Johnson. “We now have a tighter room with the bass response a non issue. All the drummers who’ve played in our live room are simply blown away at the accuracy of the room.�
The Wedge foam helped fix a nagging problem that two previous tenants had with the isolation booth; one being the improper construction and isolation techniques and the other being the cosmetics. “The Wedge foam went up to cover an added wall that was taken down and was not put back together properly, so we outfitted the entire wall side-to-side and top-to-bottom with the 2x4x2 Wedge foam,� explains Johnson. “With the addition of Sheet Block on the remaining three walls, we now have a completely controlled and dead isolation booth that provides an attractive environment for any artist.�
The final application of an Auralex product was the use of MoPads Monitor Isolation Pads to isolate the stand mounted monitor speakers. “The MoPads effectively decoupled the monitors from the stands they are resting on, really improving the accuracy of our monitor system,� continues Johnson. “The MoPads also fit in with the look and feel of the facility. We are very happy with the results from Auralex.�
