Mix Presents Sound for Film: And the Award Goes To…

The Revenant

The core crew of supervising sound editor/sound designer Martin Hernandez and re-recording mixers Frank A. Montano and Jon Taylor—all nominated last year for director Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu’s Birdman—return for the inventive director’s The Revenant, buttressed this time around by sound design work from the likes of Lon Bender and Randy Thom. Innaritu has an artist’s eye for both picture and sound, and he tends to explore the interweaving of music and effects in interesting ways through his work with composers Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto), Ryuichi Sakamoto and Bryce Dessner, blended with sound “haikus” created with Hernandez. Thom was instrumental in the wind sounds rushing across the prairie, among many other animal and human sounds of survival; wait till you hear them in an Atmos mix. Expect another nomination or two; this crew is good.
