New Plan at Cruzan

Live Nation’s Cruzan Amphitheatre in South Florida has become a mainstay of the region’s touring industry. Seating 19,000 and serving up roughly 30 shows a year, the shed is always a draw. With that in mind, the venue recently upgraded its lawn sound system and now covers the 12,000-capacity space with two-dozen L-Acoustics KARAi loudspeakers.

West Palm Beach, FL (October 2, 2014)—Live Nation’s Cruzan Amphitheatre in South Florida has become a mainstay of the region’s touring industry. Seating 19,000 and serving up roughly 30 shows a year, the shed is always a draw. With that in mind, the venue recently upgraded its lawn sound system and now covers the 12,000-capacity space with two-dozen L-Acoustics KARAi loudspeakers.

“With modern long-throw line arrays, the nature of the delay system has changed,” says Andre Serafini, owner of Miami Gardens-based Beachsound & Lighting, Inc., which designed and installed the new system. “Most touring engineers will use their own main production PA to cover at least a portion of the lawn area at an amphitheater like this, so the ‘delay’ system has become more of a ‘relay’ system, complementing and extending the performance of the main PA.”

Beachsound designed a system that flew four arrays of six KARAi enclosures—left and right, plus two outfill hangs—on the outer lip of the venue’s roof. These are powered and processed by a total of four LA8 amplified controllers housed in the venue’s spotlight towers, minimizing cable runs and maximizing existing power and signal infrastructure.

The result was noticed by the tours that came through the venue this summer. “The KARAi system is an incredible improvement to the venue and has completely changed the way we approached Cruzan Amphitheatre this year,” notes Zac Brown Band System Tech Preston Soper. “In the past, I had to attempt to cover the entire lawn area as well as the reserved seating. This year, I was able to focus on the reserved seating and let the KARAi take care of the lawn seats and it did a great job.”
