MixLine Feature: Ferentino, Corsaro Let Loose at Barber Shop Studios

Co-producer/engineer Jason Corsaro (Soundgarden, Peter Gabriel) and coproducer Tony Fortuna visited the newly opened Barber Shop Studios (see them on the cover of June 2005 Mix) in Lake Hopatcong, N.J., to track drums for guitarist/vocalist Mike Ferentino’s newest project, affectionately dubbed “The B Project.”

“We were searching for a different production style,” says Corsaro, “one with a more heavy, edgy approach, but still based on Mike’s strong, melodic songs.”

Fortuna and drummer Todd Giblin took turns behind the kit, which was augmented with a 28-inch bass drum, a Kepplinger snare and DW toms. Corsaro recorded the monster drum set on Barber Shop’s SSL XL 9000K onto Pro Tools|HD, incorporating the studio’s “amazing” vintage mic collection and tube mic pre’s. Of the studio’s spacious tracking room, Corsaro notes, “We wanted a big, live, aggressive sound, and Barber Shop’s room was perfect for it.”
