Nashville, TN (September 13, 2013)—Capturing vocals in studio and on stage is the focus of a free, September 21st event, to include live vocal performances. The Vocal Microphone Invitational 2013 is produced by the AES Nashville section, Pro Sound News and Pro Audio Review. Blue Microphones, byerdnamic, Royer Labs, Mojave Microphones and Vintage King are sponsoring the event, to be held in Oceanway Nashville’s Studio A, a world class Music Row studio owned and operated by Belmont University as part of the Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business.
The format for the event was developed for previous VMI events, the last held in 2004. Originally conceived as a Summer NAMM week event, the VMI program went on hiatus when Summer NAMM left Nashville for a few years. Now, the VMI is back as a standalone event.
Studio A at Oceanway has proven itself a venue well suited to the Vocal Microphone Invitational’s formula. A female and male vocalist, Jill Courtney and Cameron Barton, will be on hand, behind the control room glass of Ocean Way Studio A. The audience will face the studio glass from the vantage point of the spacious studio floor—meaning the singers will be seen, but not heard except through the studio playback system. Each manufacturer will have equal opportunity to present and demonstrate their microphones, the vocalists providing audible reference for the mics’ application and performance. All microphones brought for demonstration will be precisely level balanced prior to the presentation (PSN sister publication Pro Audio Review’s Technical Editor, Lynn Fuston, will oversee the calibration), with the presenter able to request the vocalists to perform on demand. The vocalists will have short selections in various styles rehearsed for request.
Following the final demonstration, VMI 2013 will be capped off with an all star engineer panel discussing tips, techniques, their personal preferences and use of microphones for vocals, both live and in studio.
The Oceanway Nashville Studio A doors will open at 10 AM on the 21st, with the sponsors available to discuss microphones and vocal capture before the demonstrations begin and in transitions between demonstrations. The greater Nashville engineering community including studio, broadcast and live sound engineers and engineering students, are invited to attend.
