At the 2014 Tony Awards held on Sunday, June 8, at Radio City Music Hall (and broadcast on the CBS network), celebrating excellence in the Broadway theater, sound designers Steve Canyon Kennedy and Brian Ronan took home statuettes in the two categories for Sound Design.
Best Sound Design of a Play went to Steve Canyon Kennedy for Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. This is Steve Canyon Kennedy’s second Tony nomination. He was previously nominated for Catch Me If You Can in 2011. According to Internet Broadway Database (ibdb.com), Kennedy won the 2013 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Sound Design in a Musical for Hands on a Hardbody; won a 2006 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Sound Design for Jersey Boys; and in 1993 he won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Sound Design for The Who’s Tommy.
Best Sound Design Of A Musical went to Brian Ronan for Beautiful—The Carole King Musical. This is Brian Ronan’s fifth Tony nomination. He was previously nominated for Nice Work If You Can Get It in 2012. Internet Broadway Database lists Ronan’s previous wins: 2014 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Sound Design in a Musical for Beautiful—The Carole King Musical; 2011 Tony Award for Best Sound Design of a Musical for The Book of Mormon; and 2011 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Sound Design in a Musical for Anything Goes.
