Digidesign Introduces New Line of Studio Reference Monitors at NAB

At the NAB 2007 show in Las Vegas, Digidesign announced the Reference Monitor Series (RMS), a new family of bi-amplified, professional-grade studio reference monitors. Digidesign developed the new RMS monitors jointly with UK-based PMC, the Professional Monitor Company. The RM1 ($1,249 each) is a 5.5-inch two-way monitor while the RM2 ($1,749 each) is a 6.7-inch two-way monitor.

Both models feature a 1-inch soft dome, ferrofluid-cooled HF driver; an independent, analog-controlled, Class-D amplifier for each driver; a balanced XLR input; an AES 3 digital input (XLR) that accepts 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96kHz sample rates; an AES RJ-45 digital input and RJ-45 thru connector; high-frequency and low-frequency controls adjustable from -4 dB to +3 dB in 0.5 dB increments; a Channel Assign feature for selecting an AES digital input channel; and a gain-trim encoder for setting the input sensitivity from 0 dB to -15 dB.

Digidesign RMS monitors employ PMC’s Advanced Transmission Line (ATL) technology, which combines sophisticated cabinet engineering, proprietary drive unit and crossover components and patented absorption materials. The RMS monitors promise improved audio resolution with a higher sound pressure level, reduced distortion, flat frequency response, and deeper, more defined bass frequencies than other speaker designs of similar size. Because the frequency response is said to remain consistent at all volume levels, there is no need to crank the volume in order to achieve maximum bass response.

PMC and Digidesign engineers developed a Bass Port Emulation feature that allows the monitors to emulate the tonal characteristics associated with ported bass reflex speakers. As a result, the Digidesign RMS monitors are said to deliver a mix as it truly sounds as well as how it translates to a ported speaker. With the Bass Port Emulation off, the frequency response is reportedly flat and free of additional coloration.

Both monitors offer a 48-bit, fixed-point digital signal processing (DSP) engine that manages various tasks, including the monitors’ complex frequency crossover, speaker positioning EQ settings, trim level and Bass Port Emulation.

Digidesign states that both models will be available May 2007.
