FiberPlex has announced its new LightViper EF-2 ($919), a dual-channel 10/100 Ethernet-to-fiber converter. The 1U rackmount EF-2 will accept two independent channels of 10/100 Ethernet via two standard RJ-45 connector/receptacles and then convert the signals to two fiber optic transmit/receive pairs. The EF-2 operates in a choice of three configurations: standard Ethernet using transmit (TX) and receive (RX) pairs (standard mode); two channels of single direction Ethernet (TX-only); or in a combination of both modes.
The EF-2’s operating modes may be easily changed by a switch located on the rear of the unit. Because the EF-2 is a hardware device, it ignores packet structure and data content, thus facilitating transparent use with AVIOM’s Pro16 monitor mixing system, CobraNet and EtherSound networks as well as standard Ethernet equipment.
Additionally, the EF-2 features an internal full-range, auto-switching AC power supply and the option of being powered by an external 9-to-18-volt DC supply. There are two fiber connection choices: (2) x 2 ST connectors or (1) x 4 channel T-4 hermaphroditic connector.
