Miami, FL – April 2009… The annual Winter Music Conference (WMC), which just completed its 24th year, is regarded as the singular networking event in the dance music industry—attracting professionals from over 70 different countries. With its high concentration of top international artists, DJs, and industry professionals, WMC permeates the international press and is thereby one of the most publicized events in the business. This year’s conference encompassed a wide range of activities—including workshops, competitions, panel discussions, an exhibit area, and an awards ceremony—and through it all, D.A.S. Audio loudspeaker systems were present in abundance.

Held at the lavish Miami Beach Resort located in Miami’s famous South Beach area, key sponsors for this year’s WMC included the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority, D.A.S. Audio, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), The Recording Academy, and Mixed Up Music. Carlos Henao, audio engineer and owner of Miami-based Paradise Production Services, serving as Technical Director for this year’s gathering, commented on the scope of the event. “This year’s WMC attracted more than 3,500 industry professionals, said Henao, “and throughout the event, which ran from March 24th through the 28th, D.A.S. Audio systems had a commanding presence.

In addition to D.A.S. Audio loudspeaker systems being present at all the major performance venues and workshops during the conference—including the International Dance Music Awards on March 26th—the company also participated in the two-day trade exhibit and, there, showed its new and highly anticipated Avant Series loudspeakers. Aimed at performing musicians, DJ’s, and others who require great sounding, highly portable loudspeakers that incorporate the latest technology, the Avant Series made quite an impression with WMC attendees.

At the Miami Beach Resort’s entrance lobby, there was non-stop music by various DJ’s. Here, Henao and his crew deployed a D.A.S. Audio Variant system in a left-right stereo configuration. Each side consisted of one Variant 112A powered array—as a top box—coupled with two Variant 18A powered subwoofers.

By the pool, where there was continuous music, including DJ spin-off competitions, Henao’s team placed a sizeable D.A.S. Aero system. This setup included Aero CA-28A compact powered line arrays—flown six elements per side, paired with a potent sub bass setup encompassing seven Aero CA-215A powered subwoofers and another seven LX-218 powered subwoofers. “There was a considerable amount of high profile activity at this location, explained Henao, “including the International Dance Music Awards, which was co-hosted by the flamboyant Spanish actress Charo.

At the hotel’s Vista Room, which was the home to several of the workshops and conferences, Henao placed D.A.S. Audio SML-15A and SML-12A powered stage monitors on tripods and augmented these with four D.A.S. Sub-18HA powered subwoofers. Similarly, for several panel discussions that occurred during the WMC, the sound reinforcement system included D.A.S. DR-112A and DR-115A powered loudspeakers. And for the WMC’s VJ Challenge—a competition for video DJ’s—Henao’s team deployed a potent D.A.S. system consisting of four DR-115A powered loudspeakers (two per side) paired with two Sub-18HA subwoofers (one per side) in a stereo configuration.

Reflecting on the abundance of D.A.S. Audio loudspeakers throughout this year’s Winter Music Conference, Henao offered this closing thought. “I’ve had tremendous success with D.A.S. Audio equipment, says Henao, “and the Winter Music Conference was a perfect example of the versatility of D.A.S. products. Our client was extremely happy and impressed with the sound of every system. They weren’t initially familiar with the D.A.S. name, but their impression now is extremely favorable. Already, they’re looking forward to D.A.S. Audio’s involvement next year.
